How and why did It's My Life DVDs begin?
It's My Life DVDs was started by Louise Bibby Hocking, a mother, former journalist and psychology graduate based in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia.
The It’s My Life DVDs business developed out of a community project Louise started while completing a Self Expression & Leadership program with Landmark Education. The project was called "It's My Life", and it focused on encouraging people to interview their family members on video. Louise set up a website which gave people information on how to go about interviewing their family members on video camera.
The project was promoted on ABC radio and local newspapers, which led to many people being inspired. However, what she found was that although people were often inspired to interview their family members, they usually didn’t do it. This was mostly due to people not finding the time or not having the confidence to do the interviews.
Prior to the project, Louise had been interviewing her family members for many years - ever since she bought her first video camera in 2000 to go to the Sydney Olympics. Her first interviewee was her Grandad who she interviewed twice in 2001. When he passed away quite suddenly later that year, Louise found that so many of her family were thrilled to have a copy of her grandfather’s life story. Any time they wanted to see him, they could just put the video on and there he was, as if he was really there in the lounge room with them. This spurred Louise on to interview other family members and anyone else she met who she thought had an interesting story and was willing to tell it on video.
Louise has now compiled a library of personal biography videos of her family. She still has some members of her immediate and extended family to go – some who are very willing and some not so much. However, her ultimate aim is to have a personal video biography of every member of her family – regardless of age. She has interviewed her 6 year old daughter many times ever since she could speak!!
Louise’s passion is to capture people’s stories while they are still around to tell them.
“One of my greatest regrets is not interviewing my mother-in-law when she was dying of cancer. I feared she would see my request as being because I thought she was going to die, so I didn't ask her. Of course, she knew the reality and had known I'd wanted to interview her for years, so my fear robbed my daughter and nephews of seeing who their grandma was other than in photos. It also left us with no other lasting memory of her than in our heads and in photos - none of which show us the animated, passionate woman who could talk the leg off a chair! I swore not to let fear get in the way of asking for and doing interviews with my relatives ever again.”
One of the major reasons Louise started It’s My Life DVDs is she doesn’t want other people having the same regrets that she has – and she never wants to have them because she missed interviewing other family members.
It’s My Life DVDs now also provides Digital Photo Slideshow Montages to assist people to compile their digital photos and allow them to be easily viewed and accessible. Another step to capturing the story of a person's life!
In the near future, Louise also plans to also run workshops for groups and individuals to instruct them on the basics of conducting video personal biographies. She also plans to create an online workshop series to compliment this.
Louise's ultimate aim is for every person, regardless of age, background, race, religion, geographical location or anything else, to have their story captured on video.
Every person has a story - many, many stories in fact - and every person deserves to get a chance to tell it and have it recorded for generations to come!!
